Game description:

Released in Europe as Super Hockey (and widely known as NHL Stanley Cup in North America), this 1993 SNES ice hockey game by Sculptured Software is famous for its distinctive pseudo-3D perspective. Leveraging the console’s Mode 7 hardware, the camera dynamically tracks right behind the active player, creating a fast-paced, immersive rink experience that stood out from the traditional top-down sports titles of the era. The game features the 26 professional teams of its time, delivering hard-hitting action with a unique visual flair.

How to Play

The objective is to outscore the opposing team across three periods of play. The default SNES controls in your browser are mapped to the keyboard: use the arrow keys to skate. Press the Z key to pass the puck or to switch your active player on defense. Press the X key to shoot the puck on offense, or to throw body checks and poke checks when defending. The behind-the-back camera rotates dynamically, so keep your bearings as you navigate the ice.

Tips

  • Because the Mode 7 camera keeps you focused straight ahead, rely heavily on the on-screen radar to track your teammates and spot open passing lanes.
  • You can wind up a much more powerful slap shot by holding the shoot button before releasing, but be careful as this leaves you temporarily vulnerable to being checked.
