Game description:

Released in Japan through the Nintendo Power flash cartridge service in 1998, Super Punch-Out!! brings Nintendo’s acclaimed arcade-style boxing action to the SNES. Stepping into the ring as a lone challenger, you must fight your way through four circuits of increasingly bizarre and challenging opponents. Rather than a realistic sports simulation, the game is a fast-paced puzzle of rhythm and reflexes, where reading your opponent’s visual cues is the only way to survive.

How to Play

Your goal is to knock out your opponent or win by technical knockout (TKO) before the three-minute round expires. Victory relies entirely on recognizing the distinct tells each fighter gives before they attack, allowing you to dodge and immediately counter.

  • D-pad (Arrow keys): Press Left or Right to dodge, Down to duck, and Up to block high attacks.
  • Y / B buttons: Execute left and right body blows. Hold Up while pressing a punch button to aim for the face.
  • X / A buttons: Unleash a devastating knockout attack. This can only be used when your Power Meter at the bottom of the screen is fully charged by landing consecutive hits.

Tips

  • Watch for telegraphs: Every opponent signals their attacks before they strike, whether it is a subtle shift in their eyes, a pulled-back fist, or a vocal taunt. Wait for the tell, dodge, and immediately counter-attack while they are vulnerable.
  • Manage your power: Taking a hit completely empties your Power Meter. Prioritize defense and dodging over blindly throwing punches, as landing continuous safe counters is the fastest way to earn your knockout blows.
  • Experiment with counters: Different fighters are vulnerable to different types of counter-attacks. If a face punch is getting blocked, try slipping in a body blow instead.
