Game description:

Developed by Roberta Williams and released by Sierra On-Line in 1984, King’s Quest is a pioneering graphic adventure for MS-DOS. You take on the role of Sir Graham, a brave knight tasked by the ailing King Edward with recovering three lost magical treasures to save the kingdom of Daventry and inherit the throne. It was revolutionary for its time, featuring pseudo-3D environments where Graham could walk behind and in front of objects.

How to play

Unlike later point-and-click adventures, you move Graham using the arrow keys and interact with the world by typing commands on the keyboard (e.g., “look at tree”, “take bowl”, or “open door”). Be careful where you walk, as Daventry is full of hazards and enemies like trolls, witches, and wolves. The game runs precisely as it did under MS-DOS; press Right Alt + Enter to toggle fullscreen mode.

Tips for Daventry

  • Save often: Sudden deaths are a hallmark of early Sierra adventures. Keep multiple save files in case you make a mistake or lose a vital item.
  • Look at everything: Type “look” in every new screen to get a description of your surroundings. Crucial items are sometimes hidden or blend into the background.
  • Respect the fairy godmother: If she appears, quickly approach her to receive a temporary spell of protection that keeps hostile creatures at bay.
