Plok! is a 1993 SNES platformer developed by Software Creations, with the character and level designs by brothers Ste and John Pickford (the game began life as their arcade concept “Fleapit” before being reworked for the SNES). You play as Plok, king of the island of Akrillic, whose limbs are removable and thrown as weapons rather than the usual jump-and-stomp attacks of the genre.
How to play
Plok’s flag has been stolen, and chasing it down leads him home to find Akrillic overrun by fleas swarming up from underground, led by the Flea Queen. A dream sequence tells the story of his grandfather’s search for a magical amulet decades earlier, which points the way to stopping her. Across the stages, Plok can launch his two arms and two legs as projectiles that fly out, hit enemies, and fly back to him faster than if they miss; he can also spin all four at once as a short-range buzzsaw-style attack. Certain switches and puzzles require sacrificing a limb to trigger them, and “presents” scattered through the levels temporarily transform Plok into other characters and vehicles, including a boxer, a gunslinger, a tank, a unicycle, and a jetpack, each with its own attack. In the browser, Plok’s SNES pad controls typically map to the arrow keys for movement, Z/X for the limb-throw and spin attacks, and Enter for start/pause.
