Released in 1992 for the Sega Genesis, Super Fantasy Zone is a vibrant horizontal scrolling shooterโoften referred to as a “cute ’em up”โwhere you control the sentient spaceship Opa-Opa. Developed by Sunsoft, the game lets you fly freely in both directions across colorful levels to defend the Fantasy Zone from the invading Menons.
In each stage, your objective is to seek out and destroy all the enemy generators to summon the boss. Defeated enemies drop coins, which you can collect and spend at the floating shop balloon to purchase engine upgrades, temporary heavy weapons, and extra lives. Use the arrow keys to move Opa-Opa, press Z to fire your main weapon, and use X to drop bombs. Press Enter to start.
The cost of weapons and upgrades increases every time you purchase them, so save your coins for when you really need the firepower. Early in the game, prioritize buying a speed upgrade like the Big Wings to make dodging enemy projectiles much easier.
