Super Castlevania IV, developed by Konami in 1991, brought the legendary action-platformer series to the 16-bit era on the SNES. Stepping into the boots of vampire hunter Simon Belmont, players explore a vastly expanded and atmospheric retelling of the original game’s journey through Dracula’s castle. The title is famous for its haunting soundtrack, moody Mode 7 graphical effects, and the introduction of a fluid, multi-directional whipping mechanic that completely changed the series’ combat.
How to play
Your objective is to survive eleven grueling stages of undead monsters and treacherous platforming to ultimately defeat Count Dracula. The controls are mapped to your keyboard: use the Arrow keys (โโโโ) to move and aim your attacks. Press S to attack with your whip and X to jump. You can use your equipped sub-weapon by pressing E (the SNES R button). The Shift key acts as Select, and Enter is your Start button for pausing the game.
Tips
- Master the multi-directional whip: Unlike earlier games, you can whip in eight directions. You can also let the whip dangle to block enemy projectiles by holding the attack button and using the directional keys.
- Use the whip to swing: Look for floating rings in the environment. You can latch onto these with your whip to swing safely across wide gaps.
- Save your hearts: Hearts power your sub-weapons (like the axe, holy water, and cross). The cross is particularly devastating against bosses when it hits multiple times on its return flight.
