Game description:

SubTerrania is a challenging multi-directional shooter developed by Zyrinx for the Sega Genesis in 1994. Known for its realistic physics and demanding difficulty, the game puts you in control of an experimental attack fighter navigating deep underground caverns. The core mechanic revolves around constantly battling gravity; you must carefully manage your ship’s momentum and limited fuel supply while fighting off alien invaders and rescuing trapped miners.

How to Play

Your primary objective in each level is to locate and rescue stranded miners before reaching the exit, all while destroying enemy forces. The game requires precise piloting, as gravity constantly pulls your ship downward. The default Sega Genesis controls map the D-pad to rotating your ship, the A button to thrust, and the B and C buttons to fire your primary and secondary weapons (typically played with the arrow keys to steer, and Z, X, C on your keyboard). You must keep a close eye on your fuel gauge, which depletes whenever you thrust.

Tips

  • Conserve Fuel: Do not hold the thrust button continuously. Tap it to maintain altitude and let gravity do some of the work when descending.
  • Prioritize Miners: Aliens will attack the stranded miners. Try to learn the layout of each cavern to reach and rescue them quickly.
  • Use the Environment: Submarine sections allow you to maneuver without spending fuel, so use these areas to your advantage when available.
