Sub-Terrania is a multidirectional shooter developed by Zyrinx and released for the Sega Genesis in 1994. You pilot an experimental attack fighter through deep underground caverns to repel an alien invasion and rescue trapped miners. The game stands out for its demanding physics engine: you must constantly manage gravity, momentum, and a limited fuel supply while navigating tight, perilous corridors.
How to play
Your objectives in each cavern are to rescue the scattered miners, destroy alien targets, and safely reach the exit module. On the Sega Genesis, use the D-pad (mapped to the arrow keys) to rotate your ship. Press B (X) to thrust, A (Z) to fire your weapons, and C (Shift or C) to deploy your directional shields and tractor beam. Thrusting drains your fuel rapidly, so you must carefully guide your ship to fuel canisters before you run empty and crash.
Tips
- Feather the thrusters: Do not hold the thrust button continuously. Tap it gently to maintain altitude and conserve your fuel supply.
- Master the shield: Your shield deflects enemy fire but can also be used as a battering ram to destroy enemies and certain obstacles without wasting ammo.
- Plan your route: Fuel is scarce and drains constantly. Prioritize grabbing fuel tanks and rescuing miners efficiently rather than exploring aimlessly.
