SubTerrania is a unique multi-directional gravity shooter developed by Zyrinx and released for the Sega Genesis in 1994. Breaking away from traditional scrolling shooters, this game gives you full 360-degree control of an experimental prototype fighter in a deep, subterranean environment. Tasked with rescuing trapped miners and fending off an alien invasion, you must carefully navigate treacherous caverns while constantly battling the pull of gravity and monitoring your limited fuel supply.
How to Play
Your primary objective in each level is to rescue the designated number of miners and defeat the alien boss, then return to your base. Because the game uses a physics-based control scheme, you must use your thrusters to counteract gravity and maneuver through the caves. Your ship is equipped with a tractor beam for rescuing miners and moving heavy objects, as well as a primary weapon that can be upgraded in multiple directions.
Default Genesis controls map to your keyboard:
- Arrow Keys: Rotate your ship
- Z: Fire primary weapon
- X: Activate thrusters
- C: Use the tractor beam / Shield
- Enter: Start / Pause
Tips
- Manage Your Fuel: Every thrust burns fuel, and gravity is constantly pulling you down. Look for fuel canisters scattered throughout the levels and fly efficiently to avoid crashing.
- Master the Tractor Beam: The tractor beam isn’t just for rescuing miners; you can use it to fling rocks at enemies or clear paths. Be careful not to drop heavy objects on the people you’re trying to save.
- Watch the Minimap: The caves are vast and easily confusing. Use the HUD’s minimap to locate stranded miners and fuel depots before you run out of resources.
