Snow Bros. is a classic action platformer released for the NES in 1991, originally developed by Toaplan. Heavily inspired by the single-screen arcade mechanics of games like Bubble Bobble, players control one of the titular snowmen brothers, Nick and Tom, as they battle through 50 stages. Instead of blowing bubbles, you throw snow to freeze enemies into solid snowballs, which can then be kicked to clear the screen, collect points, and discover power-up potions.
How to Play
Your objective is to clear all enemies from each screen to advance to the next stage and ultimately rescue the captive princesses. Use the D-pad (mapped to arrow keys in the browser) to move and navigate platforms, the A button (X) to jump, and the B button (Z) to throw snow. Press Start (Enter) to begin. Tapping the throw button continuously will cover an enemy in snow until they are completely frozen into a large snowball. Once frozen, walk into the snowball and press the throw button again to kick it across the stage, crushing other enemies in its path and ricocheting off walls.
Tips
- Kicking a snowball so that it bounces and takes out multiple enemies at once is the key to earning high scores and spawning bonus items from defeated foes.
- Be on the lookout for coloured potion bottles dropped by enemies: Red increases your movement speed, Blue increases the power of your snow throws, and Yellow increases the distance your snow travels.
- Don’t linger too long on a single stage. An invincible pumpkin-headed ghost will appear if you take too much time, relentlessly chasing you until you lose a life or clear the screen.
