Game description:

Developed by Rare and released for the NES in 1990, Snake Rattle n Roll is a highly original isometric action platformer. You control one of two snakesโ€”Rattle or Rollโ€”navigating tricky 3D environments filled with hazards and enemies. The objective is to eat round creatures known as “Nibbley Pibbleys” to grow your tail and gain enough weight to trigger the scale at the end of the level, which rings a bell and opens the exit.

How to Play

Guide your snake through the levels, using your tongue to snatch up Nibbley Pibbleys and defeat enemies. Eating adds segments to your tail, but taking damage will cause you to lose them. If you take a hit with no extra segments, you’ll lose a life. Reach the required weight to open the door to the next stage.

  • Move: Arrow Keys
  • Jump: Z
  • Attack (Tongue): X
  • Start: Enter
  • Select: Shift

Tips

  • Watch your shadow: Because of the isometric perspective, looking at your snake’s shadow is the most reliable way to judge your position when making tricky jumps over gaps.
  • Grind for weight before the scale: If you reach the end of the level but haven’t eaten enough to ring the bell, you’ll need to find more Nibbley Pibbleys or farm nearby enemy spawners.
  • Keep moving: If you take too long in a level, an alarm will sound and a giant foot will drop from the sky to stomp you. Keep a steady pace to avoid running out of time.
