Kings of the Beach is Electronic Arts’ two-on-two beach volleyball game for the NES, published in 1988. You compete in a sun-soaked tournament circuit, guiding your team through a bracket of increasingly skilled opponents on sandy courts. Pick-up-and-play from the start, the game rewards timing and smart positioning over button-mashing.
How to play
Move with the arrow keys. Press X (NES A button) to jump, spike, or dive, and Z (NES B button) to serve or set. In single-player mode the CPU controls your partner; bring a friend and a second player can join on the same keyboard using the same keys. Press Enter to start and Shift for the Select button in menus.
Tips
- Time your spike at the peak of your jump — hitting too early or too late sends the ball out of bounds or into the net.
- Watch the ball’s shadow on the sand when you are on defence so you know exactly where to position your dive rather than guessing.
- Vary your serves between deep cross-court hits and short drops near the net; predictable serves are easy for the opponent to set up against.
