Ring King is a boxing game for the NES, developed by Woodplace and published by Data East in 1985. You play as an aspiring champion working your way through a series of increasingly tough opponents, each bout bringing you closer to the title of Ring King. The game views the fight from above the ring — a spatial perspective that lets you read spacing and angles rather than watching a flat side-on exchange.
How to Play
The goal is to knock out your opponent before they knock you out, or outscore them if the fight goes the full distance. Health takes damage when punches land, so moving is as important as swinging. Between rounds your corner restores some health before the next bout. Ring King is single-player only.
Controls (Player 1):
| Move / dodge | Arrow keys |
| B — jab | Z |
| A — punch | X |
| Select | Shift |
| Start | Enter |
Tips
- Keep moving. Standing still makes you easy to hit — step sideways with the arrow keys before you commit to a swing.
- Z (B button) jabs are faster and recover quickly; X (A button) hits harder but leaves a longer gap. Open with a jab to test the range, then follow with a power punch when you spot the opening.
- Each opponent has a pattern. Watch their first few attacks before trading freely — once you identify the rhythm, countering becomes straightforward.
