Game description:

Released in 1983 for the Famicom (NES), Popeye no Eigo Asobi is a charming edutainment title developed by Nintendo to teach Japanese players basic English vocabulary. Reusing the familiar sights and sounds of the classic 1982 arcade hit, the game challenges you to spell out words to keep Bluto from knocking Swee'Pea out of his basket, combining basic language lessons with classic platforming tension.

How to Play

The game features two main modes: Word Puzzle, a Hangman-style game where you punch letters to spell translations of Japanese words, and Word Catcher, a two-player mode where you must catch falling letters in the correct order. Use the arrow keys (D-pad) to move Popeye, Z (A button) to jump or punch letters, and Enter (Start) to pause the action or make selections on the menu screen.

Tips

  • In Word Puzzle mode, avoid punching the question mark block—while it instantly solves the word for you, it counts as an automatic round loss.
  • Start with Word Puzzle A if you need the Katakana translations; Word Puzzle B hides the hints and expects a stronger grasp of English vocabulary.
