Popeye no Eigo Asobi (Popeye’s English Word Game) is an educational 1983 release by Nintendo for the Famicom, built on the engine of the classic Popeye arcade game. Originally designed to teach Japanese players English spelling, this version features an English translation patch by KingMike that localizes the clues. Players control Popeye across familiar multi-tiered stages, collecting letters dropped by Olive Oyl to correctly spell words while dodging Bluto and other hazards.
How to Play
The game features a “Word Catcher” mode where you must catch letters in the correct order to spell the word matching the given clue, and a “Word Puzzle” mode which plays similarly to Hangman. You can control Popeye using the standard NES browser bindings: use the Arrow Keys to move up and down stairs or walk, Z and X for the A and B buttons to punch items or confirm selections, and Enter or Shift for Start and Select.
Tips
- In Word Catcher, if Olive drops a letter you do not need right now, you can punch it to push it back up into the air, buying you time to grab the correct one first.
- Just like in the original arcade game, grabbing the spinach will temporarily give Popeye the power to knock Bluto off the screen.
