Originally designed by Yu Suzuki for the arcades, OutRun was brought to the Sega Genesis in 1991. Sega described it as a driving experience rather than a traditional racing game, putting you behind the wheel of a red convertible on a high-speed road trip across branching, scenic landscapes.
How to Play
Your objective is to reach the end of one of the five branching routes before the timer runs out. Passing through checkpoints extends your time limit. In this browser version, steer your car using the arrow keys, accelerate with X, brake with Z, and shift between high and low gears using C. Press Enter to start.
Tips
- Master your gears: Always start in low gear to build speed quickly, then shift to high gear once you are moving fast. Remember to downshift if you crash or slow down significantly.
- Choose your path: The road forks at the end of each stage. As a general rule, taking the left branches leads to easier stages, while the right branches are more difficult.
- Avoid collisions: Crashing into scenery or bumping other vehicles will cost you valuable seconds. It is often faster to brake slightly for a corner than to crash at full speed.
