Released by Sega in 1986, OutRun is a definitive arcade racing game ported to DOS that trades traditional circuit laps for a scenic cross-country road trip against the clock. Driving a recognizable red sports car with a passenger by your side, you race through vibrant, shifting environments, choosing your own route at branching checkpoints before time expires.
How to Play
Your objective is to reach one of five final destinations before the countdown hits zero. You must navigate traffic, manage your speed through tight corners, and avoid off-road obstacles that will cause a crash. The game is controlled using standard DOS keys; typically, the arrow keys steer, accelerate, and brake, while a separate key toggles between high and low gears. Press Right Alt + Enter to toggle fullscreen mode.
Tips
- Gear Shifting is Crucial: The high/low gear shift is your primary tool for cornering. Staying in high gear maximizes speed, but shifting down to low gear is essential for quickly decelerating into sharp turns without spinning out.
- Learn the Branches: At the end of each stage, the road forks. Left routes generally offer easier tracks, while right routes present more challenging terrain and tighter curves.
- Prioritize Avoiding Collisions: Hitting other cars or roadside obstacles causes massive speed loss and wastes precious seconds. It is often faster to briefly lift off the accelerator and maneuver safely through traffic than to try squeezing through at top speed and crashing.
