Game description:

Metal Fighter is an unlicensed 1989 side-scrolling shoot-’em-up for the NES, developed by Joy Van. Bringing an experimental approach to the genre, the game puts you in control of the MCS-920 robot on a mission to free planet H17 from alien invaders. Unlike traditional space shooters, you begin each life grounded on foot and must battle your way to a specific power-up before you can take to the skies.

How to Play

Control your mecha using the standard NES layout. Use the Arrow keys to move and aim, Z to shoot, X to jump (or fly, once unlocked), and Enter to pause. The combat is uniquely flexible: you can freely turn to fire behind you, and holding the shoot button charges a devastating plasma attack.

Gameplay Tips

  • Fight for upgrades: Weapon capsules don’t just grant you firepower. Collecting one transports you to a mini-boss room where you must duel a mirror image of your own robot to earn the upgrade.
  • Find the “F”: To stop walking and start flying, you must destroy specific enemies to uncover the “F” (Flight) power-up.
  • Mind the bosses: End-of-stage bosses are notoriously difficult and can often destroy you in a single hit regardless of your shield status. Prioritize dodging their attacks over rushing for damage.
