Pitstop II is a landmark 1984 racing game developed by Synergistic Software and published by Epyx for DOS. It stands out as one of the very first racing titles to feature a simultaneous split-screen two-player mode. Rather than just trying to beat the clock, players compete head-to-head across six international tracks while managing crucial strategic elements like tire wear and fuel consumption.
How to play
In addition to navigating the track, you must monitor your tiresโwhich change color as they degradeโand your fuel gauge. When either gets too low, you have to pull into the pit stop. Pit stops are fully interactive: you manually control your pit crew to quickly refuel the car and swap out worn tires before your opponent gains too much ground.
Controls: Game is controlled by the same keys that are used to playing under MS DOS. For fullscreen press ‘Right Alt’ + ‘Enter’.
Tips
- Watch your tires: Keep an eye on the color of your tires. Pushing them too far will cause a blowout and end your race instantly.
- Master the pit crew: Practice moving your crew efficiently during pit stops, as a few extra seconds lost refueling can easily cost you the lead.
- Strategic pitting: Try to time your pit stops so you change tires and refuel simultaneously to minimize time spent off the track.
