Originally released in 1988 by Square for the NES (Famicom), Final Fantasy II breaks from traditional RPG mechanics by introducing an activity-based progression system. Instead of earning experience points to level up, your characters improve the specific skills and stats they use in combat. This version features the complete English translation by Demiforce, along with community bug fixes that patch out the infamous action-cancel exploit, requiring you to level up your party legitimately.
How to Play
Navigate the world, talk to NPCs, and select commands in turn-based battles. By default on the NES, the D-pad controls movement and menus, the A button confirms actions, and the B button cancels. In your browser emulator, these are typically mapped to the Arrow keys for movement, Z for A, X for B, and Enter for Start.
Tips
- Specialize your party: Because stats improve through use, it is best to assign specific roles. Have one character focus heavily on white magic and another on physical attacks, rather than making everyone a generalist.
- To increase HP, take damage: Characters only gain maximum HP if they lose a significant amount of health during a battle. Don’t be afraid to let your front line take hits.
- Leveling spells: Magic becomes more powerful the more you cast it. Cast essential spells like Cure or your primary offensive magic frequently to ensure they remain effective against tougher enemies.
