Final Fantasy II is a 1988 role-playing game developed and published by Square for the Famicom, the first entry in the series built around a continuous story with named protagonists. Four young rebels — Firion, Maria, Guy, and Leon — survive an imperial ambush at the opening and join a resistance against the Palamecia Empire. The game was never released outside Japan in its original form, and the ROM here is the Famicom version.
How to play
Move through towns and dungeons with the arrow keys. In menus and battle, X confirms and Z cancels or flees. Enter opens the field menu — items, magic, equipment, save — and Shift is Select. Combat is turn-based and menu-driven: choose to attack, cast a spell, use an item, or run. Characters have no experience levels; instead, every stat rises based on what each character actually does in battle. Attack with a weapon to raise Strength and weapon proficiency; cast spells to raise Intelligence and spell level; absorb hits to raise maximum HP.
Tips
- Decide each character’s role early and commit to it. Stats only rise in what you use, so a character who splits time between attacking and casting ends up mediocre at both. Maria starts with magic and excels as a dedicated mage; Guy is built for the front line.
- Collect keywords in conversation — words highlighted in NPC dialogue — and ask other NPCs about them. Critical quest leads often only surface when you bring the right keyword to the right person.
- Spell levels rise from repeated casting, so use your attack spells in every fight, even easy ones. The early investment in spell level carries forward to the bosses ahead where it matters most.
