Game description:

Conflict is a classic turn-based strategy game released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1989. Developed by Vic Tokai, this hex-based war simulator places players in a Cold War-inspired conflict between the “Blue” and “Red” armies. As one of the earliest console games to feature tactical hex map gameplay, Conflict challenges players to capture towns and airstrips, produce advanced military units like tanks and F-16s, and outmaneuver the enemy commander.

How to Play

The primary objective is to defeat the opposing commander’s forces while managing resources and capturing key locations. Combat takes place in a menu-driven battle mode when enemy units clash. The default NES controls apply: use the D-pad (mapped to arrow keys) to navigate the hex grid and menus, the A button (Z key) to select units or confirm actions, and the B button (X key) to cancel or view unit stats. Press Start (Enter) to open the main command menu.

Tips

  • Focus on capturing towns and airstrips early to increase your Fame Points (FP), which are essential for producing stronger units.
  • Keep your more fragile air units properly fueled by regularly returning them to captured airstrips for resupply.
  • Use the terrain to your advantage; defending units in forests or cities have a significant tactical edge over units out in the open.
