Dezaemon is a unique shoot ’em up creation tool for the NES, originally released in Japan in 1991 by Athena. This English translation by Aeon Genesis fully localizes the complex menus, allowing you to design your own custom vertical scrolling shooters from scratch. Instead of just playing a standard campaign, you are given a full suite of tools to draw your own player ship, enemies, and backgrounds, compose custom music, and construct level layouts and attack patterns.
How to play
The interface relies on standard NES controls, which are mapped to your keyboard. Use the D-pad (Arrow keys) to navigate the creation menus, move the paint cursor, and steer your ship during gameplay. The A button (Z key) is used to confirm selections, place pixels in the graphic editor, and fire your weapons. The B button (X key) cancels menu choices and acts as an eraser. Press Start (Enter) to test your game or pause, and Select (Shift) to swap between editing tools.
Tips
- Start with the sample game: Instead of building from a completely blank slate, load and modify the included sample game. It provides a helpful framework for understanding how enemy waves and boss behaviors are programmed.
- Prioritize bullet visibility: When designing your graphics, make sure to use high-contrast colors for enemy bullets so they stand out clearly against your custom backgrounds.
