Originally released in Japan for the Famicom Disk System and later known in the West as The Lost Levels, Super Mario Bros. 2 (Japan) is a legendary platformer developed by Nintendo. This version features English text and preserves the notorious, punishing difficulty that defined the original Japanese sequel. Instead of introducing completely new mechanics like the Western release of Super Mario Bros. 2, this game builds directly on the engine of the first game, adding hazards like Poison Mushrooms, wind gusts, and complex level design intended specifically for veteran players.
How to Play
Your goal is to guide Mario (or Luigi, who has higher jumps but less traction) through eight challenging worlds to rescue Princess Toadstool from Bowser. Navigate the environment, avoid or defeat enemies, and reach the flagpole at the end of each stage.
- Move: Arrow Keys
- Jump: Z
- Dash / Throw Fireballs: X
- Start / Pause: Enter
- Select: Shift
Tips
- Watch out for Poison Mushrooms: Unlike regular Super Mushrooms, the ones with dark spots will damage or kill you on contact.
- Use the wind to your advantage: In certain levels, strong gusts of wind blow across the screen. You can use these gusts to make incredibly long jumps that would otherwise be impossible.
- Beware of hidden blocks: Invisible blocks are often placed maliciously over pits or in the path of your jumps. Try to memorize their locations or test suspicious gaps.
