Game description:

Released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1993, Battleship translates the classic Milton Bradley naval combat board game into a digital strategy title featuring tactical missile strikes and animated battle cutscenes. Players secretively position five warshipsโ€”including an aircraft carrier, battleship, cruiser, submarine, and destroyerโ€”across a hidden grid, aiming to locate and sink the opponent’s fleet before their own armada is destroyed.

How to Play

Position your fleet strategically on your grid using the directional pad, then take turns targeting individual grid coordinates to locate enemy vessels. Alongside standard single shots, the NES adaptation introduces military operations mode where surviving ship types unlock specialized strikes such as broadside volleys, air support, and sonar reconnaissance.

  • D-Pad / Arrow Keys: Move the target cursor or place ships during grid setup.
  • A / Z: Confirm target coordinate, fire weapon, or place a ship.
  • B / X: Rotate ships during placement or toggle target view modes.
  • Start / Enter: Confirm grid deployment and pause the game.
  • Select / Shift: Switch fleet configuration or weapon options.

Tips

  • Deploy in a Checkerboard Grid: Space your shots out across alternating grid squares to locate large enemy ships efficiently before narrowing down adjacent spaces once a hit is registered.
  • Protect Key Naval Assets: Protect your aircraft carrier and submarine early on to retain access to powerful air strike and sonar radar actions in tactical mode.
