Battleship is a 1993 digital adaptation of the classic strategy board game for the NES. It brings the familiar grid-based naval combat to the console, where you command a fleet of ships and attempt to deduce the location of your opponent’s armada before they destroy yours.
How to play
The objective is to guess the coordinates of your opponent’s hidden ships on a grid and destroy their entire fleet. Before combat begins, you secretly position your own ships (ranging from the small Patrol Boat to the large Aircraft Carrier). During gameplay, players take alternating turns firing shots at the enemy grid.
Controls:
- D-pad / Arrow Keys: Move the cursor to select a grid square.
- A / Z Key: Fire a shot or confirm ship placement.
- B / X Key: Rotate ships during the placement phase.
- Start / Enter Key: Pause the game or start the match.
Tips
- Checkerboard Strategy: Fire your shots in a diagonal checkerboard pattern to maximize the chances of finding a ship while minimizing wasted turns.
- Follow Up Quickly: Once you score a hit, immediately target the adjacent squares (up, down, left, right) to determine the orientation of the enemy ship.
