Xybots is an unreleased prototype of the classic Atari arcade maze shooter, ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991. Developed by Tengen before its eventual cancellation, this prototype adapts the unique behind-the-back perspective to the 8-bit console. Players navigate multi-level space stations, battling an army of mechanical enemies to save humanity.
The objective is to explore each maze-like level and find the exit elevator, collecting keys to open doors and coins to purchase upgrades between stages. The game uses standard NES controls (D-pad, A, B, Start, Select), which are mapped to the arrow keys, Z, X, Enter, and Shift in your browser. Since the original arcade machine used a special twisting joystick to rotate the player, turning in this port is handled by the directional inputs.
Tips
- Explore carefully: Coins found in the maze are essential for buying upgrades like extra speed or armor at shop stations.
- Manage your energy: Your health constantly drains and acts as a time limit, so move efficiently and grab food pickups.
- Use the map: Keep an eye on the radar to spot enemies approaching from behind or waiting around corners.
