Game description:

Gegege no Kitarou: Youkai Daimakyou (Spooky Kitaro in the Yokai World) is a 1986 action-platformer released for the Famicom/NES by Bandai. Based on the beloved classic manga and anime series by Shigeru Mizuki, the game puts you in the wooden sandals of Kitarou, a yokai boy tasked with defeating an array of Japanese mythological creatures. You will navigate through side-scrolling demonic realms, defeat enemies using Kitarou’s signature hair needles, and rescue his allies to help conquer each stage’s boss. This version features a complete English translation patch by Aishsha, making the classic adventure fully accessible.

How to Play

Your objective is to reach the end of each yokai-infested stage, defeat the boss, and collect crystals to progress.

  • D-Pad / Arrow Keys: Move Kitarou left or right, duck, or climb ladders.
  • A Button / Z Key: Jump.
  • B Button / X Key: Attack. By default, Kitarou fires a rapid barrage of hair needles.
  • Start Button / Enter Key: Pause the game or start.
  • Select Button / Shift Key: Cycle through your special weapons and ally summons if you have collected them.

Tips

  • Gather Your Allies: Look for items that let you summon Kitarou’s friends. For example, finding Ittan Momen (the cotton roll yokai) allows you to temporarily fly and bypass tricky platforming sections.
  • Explore Alternate Routes: Stages often have multiple paths or hidden doors that lead to different areas or shortcuts. Pay attention to the background to find secret entrances.
  • Save Special Attacks for Bosses: Ammo for your secondary attacks is limited. Try to rely on your standard hair needles for regular yokai and unleash your powerful abilities when facing the level boss.
