Game description:

Road Fighter is a top-down, vertically scrolling racing game from Konami, released in 1984. Originally an arcade title, it reached the NES/Famicom the same year. You drive a lone race car through streams of traffic across multiple stages, but speed alone does not win — a fuel meter ticks down throughout the run, and you stay alive by collecting fuel canisters dropped along the road. Let the tank hit zero and the run ends, collision or not.

How to play

Steer with the left and right arrow keys; up accelerates and down brakes. Your goal each stage is to reach the finish line before your fuel runs out, while avoiding collisions that cost you a life. The controls follow the standard NES browser layout: A button = X, B button = Z, Start = Enter, Select = Shift. Road Fighter is single-player only.

Tips

  • Fuel canisters are the priority. Missing a canister on a clear stretch almost always costs more than the time you lose swerving for it.
  • Yellow cars spin you out. Contact with a yellow vehicle sends your car into a spin that usually triggers a secondary crash — give them a wide berth even when it means slowing down.
  • Thread the edges. When centre traffic clumps together, the outermost lanes often stay clearer and give you a longer sight line for what is coming next.
