Top Gun: The Second Mission is a cockpit-perspective aerial combat game published by Konami for the NES in 1989. A follow-up to the 1987 original, it puts you in the cockpit of an F-14 Tomcat across a series of missions โ dogfighting enemy jets and completing bombing runs โ before capping each stage with an aircraft-carrier landing that demands more precision than it first appears.
How to Play
Arrow keys steer the aircraft. X fires your primary weapon; Z is the secondary. Enter starts the game; Shift selects. Two sequences break up the dogfighting on each mission: a mid-flight aerial refueling from a tanker, where you must hold steady while docking, and the carrier landing at the end.
Tips
- Start your carrier approach early and keep the descent gradual โ the guide lights are your only reference, and rushing the final stretch usually ends in a crash.
- During refueling, use small corrections rather than large inputs; overshooting the tanker is harder to recover than drifting in slowly.
- Enemy jets become faster and more aggressive across later missions โ take out the ones firing missiles first and deal with gun-range threats second.
