Road Fighter is a fast-paced top-down scrolling racing game developed by Konami, originally hitting arcades in 1984 before being ported to the NES in 1985. The objective is to speed your red sports car to the finish line before your fuel runs out. Unlike traditional circuit racers, you aren’t competing against other drivers for position; instead, you must navigate through heavy traffic, dodge oil slicks, and collect fuel to survive the increasingly difficult stages.
How to play
In the browser, use the arrow keys to steer your car left and right. The Z and X keys control your two acceleration speedsโone is a lower gear for safer maneuvering, and the other is your top speed. As you drive, your fuel gauge constantly depletes. To refill your fuel and reach the end of the course, you must touch the special brightly colored, flashing cars along the road.
Tips
- Watch the behavior of the traffic carefully: blue and yellow cars generally drive straight, but red cars will actively swerve into your lane to block you.
- If you clip another vehicle or hit an oil slick and start spinning out, rapidly steer in the direction of the skid to regain control and avoid crashing into the roadside.
- Drive cleanly without crashing for a long stretch, and you might spot Konami Man flying up the side of the screen for bonus points!
