Game description:

Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair is a unique entry in the classic series, shifting away from action-RPG elements into a fast-paced blend of auto-scrolling platformer and shoot ’em up. Developed by Westone and ported to the Sega Genesis, the game splits its levels into two distinct halves: a ground-based run-and-gun section where you jump and fire at enemies while managing a depleting vitality timer, followed by an airborne boss rush where you ride a flying dragon.

How to play

Your vitality constantly drains and can only be replenished by collecting fruit dropped by defeated enemies. Navigate the auto-scrolling stages, collect varied weapon power-ups, and survive until you reach the boss. Standard Genesis controls apply: use the directional pad to move, and A, B, or C to jump and fire your weapons. In your browser, these are mapped to the arrow keys and Z, X, or C.

Tips

  • Keep moving and prioritize collecting fruit over defeating every single enemy; your timer is your biggest enemy in the platforming sections.
  • Certain weapon power-ups are better suited for specific bosses, so try to hold onto a wide-spread or piercing weapon if you know a boss fight is coming up.
