Wonder Boy is a fast-paced arcade platformer developed by Escape and published by Sega in 1986. This build, “Set 2, Not Encrypted,” is a MAME preservation of the arcade PCB’s program ROMs with the original CPU encryption removed for accurate emulation — the game itself plays identically to the standard coin-op release. You control Tom-Tom, a caveboy racing across island, forest, and cave stages to rescue his kidnapped girlfriend Tina, running and jumping with constant forward momentum.
How to play
Reach the goal at the end of each stage before your vitality meter empties — it drains steadily, so eating fruit along the way to refill it is essential. Smashing open eggs can reveal helpful items like a skateboard, a stone axe, or a fairy that grants brief invincibility, but some eggs release a grim reaper or poison mushroom that drains your health fast. As an arcade cabinet, press Shift to insert a coin and Enter to start. Move with the arrow keys, and use Z and X to jump, run, and throw axes once armed.
Tips
- Grab the skateboard whenever you see it: besides moving faster, it absorbs one hit that would otherwise kill you — just remember it can’t stop on a dime.
- Don’t stop to fight everything. Vaulting over an enemy to reach the next piece of fruit usually costs less vitality than trading hits with it.
- Learn to recognize the “bad” eggs before you break them; a wasted swing on a poison mushroom or reaper egg can undo several stages of careful fruit collection.
