Wardner World (often known simply as Wardner or Pyros in North America) is a side-scrolling action-platformer developed by Toaplan and released for arcades in 1987. You take control of Dover on a perilous quest through a magical forest to rescue his kidnapped companion, Mia, from the evil warlock Wardner. Distinct from many standard arcade platformers of its era, it incorporates light role-playing elements, allowing players to collect gold dropped by enemies to purchase weapon upgrades and defensive items between stages.
How to Play
Your objective is to navigate to the end of each stage while fighting off mythical enemies and avoiding hazards. Along the way, collect golden orbs dropped by defeated foes to use as currency in the shops found at the end of each level. For the browser arcade controls, use the Arrow Keys to move and climb ladders, Z to shoot your magic attacks, and X to jump. Press Enter to start or insert credits.
Tips
- Save up for the Cape: Prioritise buying the magical cape in the shop. It allows you to take an extra hit before losing a life, which is essential for surviving the harder later stages.
- Upgrade your magic carefully: While there are several fire attack variations, the wide-spread magic or the boomerang-style attack often provide better crowd control than standard linear shots.
- Master the jump timing: Some gaps and platforms require precise momentum. Get comfortable with your character’s jumping arc early on, as later levels feature many tricky instant-death pits.
