Game description:

Released in 1991 for the NES, Totally Rad is a side-scrolling action platformer that drips with extreme early 90s surfer slang. Developed by Aicom and published by Jaleco, the game follows a skateboarding teenager named Jake as he uses newly acquired magic powers to rescue his girlfriend Allison from an invading alien force.

How to Play

Your objective is to run, jump, and shoot your way through five stages of challenging enemies and intense boss fights. The standout feature is Jake’s magic menu, which allows him to pause the action and spend mana to heal, unleash screen-clearing elemental attacks, or transform into powerful creatures like a winged demon or a water-dwelling fish. The default browser controls map to standard NES inputs: use the Arrow Keys to move, Z to jump, X to shoot, and Enter to pause or select your magic spells.

Tips

  • Do not hoard your magic. Your mana meter fully replenishes between levels, so use your transformation spells frequently to survive tough sections.
  • The eagle transformation is incredibly useful for flying over dangerous hazards and completely bypassing difficult enemy placements.
