Game description:

Syobon Action NES Edition is a fan-made ROM hack for the NES, built on Nintendo’s original Super Mario Bros. (1985) engine but restyled with the sprites, enemies, and merciless design philosophy of Syobon Action (also known as Cat Mario), the notorious 2007 Japanese freeware platformer created by developer Chiku. Released in March 2021 by hacker “6647”, this version reworks five levels around Syobon Action’s signature trick: nothing that looks safe actually is.

How to play

The goal in each of the five levels is simply to reach the end alive, but almost everything is a trap: solid-looking blocks sprout hidden spikes, ordinary ground tiles vanish underfoot, enemies spawn right on top of the player, and even background scenery can kill on contact. Use the D-pad (arrow keys) to move, A (Z) to jump, and B (X) to run; press Start (Enter) to pause. This hack gives the player 20 lives instead of Mario’s usual 3, so the constant trial-and-error deaths are survivable without leaning on save states.

Tips

  • Assume every inviting reward, like a floating coin block, is bait until proven otherwise; memorize which ones are actually traps.
  • Take running jumps cautiously; the extra momentum from sprinting can carry you straight into a hidden spike wall you’d have cleared at walking speed.
  • Treat the 20 starting lives as a memorization budget rather than a safety net; each death teaches you exactly where the next trap in that stretch is hiding.
