Game description:

Konami’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time hit the SNES in 1992, adapting the beloved arcade beat ’em up with extra content built just for the console. Shredder flings Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael through a time warp, and the Turtles have to fight their way back to the present, brawling through Foot Clan soldiers and TMNT villains across eras from the age of the dinosaurs to a neon-lit future. The SNES version adds four whole stages the arcade original didn’t have, including a boss-rush trip through the Technodrome.

How to Play

Clear each stage of enemies and beat the era’s boss to jump ahead in time. In the browser, the D-pad is the arrow keys, the SNES face buttons (A/B/X/Y) map to Z/X/A/S, Enter is Start, and Shift is Select. Double-tap a direction to dash into enemies, and time a jump followed by an attack the instant you land for a jump-kick. Pressing two attack buttons together triggers each Turtle’s power attack, with its own animation: Leonardo spins with his katana, Michelangelo lashes out with his nunchaku or grapple, Donatello thrusts with his bo staff, and Raphael unleashes a spin kick.

Tips

  • Pick your reach: Donatello’s bo staff has the longest range of the four Turtles, which makes him the easiest to keep enemies at bay with if you’re still learning the stages.
  • Save your power attack for crowds: it briefly makes you invincible, so use it to punch out of a surround rather than the first enemy you see — it costs a chunk of your life bar.
  • Watch your footing on the moving stages: the pirate-ship level has cannon fire and collapsing deck sections, and the hoverboard “surfing” stages scroll on their own, so jump gaps early rather than waiting until you’re on top of them.
