Game description:

Released in 1995 for the Sega Genesis, Surging Aura is a late-era 16-bit role-playing game developed by Japan Media Programming. Featuring character and monster designs by Mutsumi Inomataโ€”renowned for her work on the Tales seriesโ€”the story follows a young prince named Muu on a quest to prevent the resurrection of an evil mage. The game is highly regarded for its lush visuals and a unique semi-real-time combat system. While originally a Japanese exclusive, a fan translation allows the sweeping adventure to be fully experienced in English.

How to Play

Players explore towns, delve into dungeons, and engage in tactical battles against demonic forces. In combat, actions are governed by a real-time timer represented by a filling glass sphere. Magic is a central focus; powerful spells take time to chant, leaving the caster vulnerable to enemy interruption unless defended by other party members. In the browser, navigate the world using the arrow keys. The Genesis A, B, and C buttons are mapped to your keyboard’s action keys for confirming commands and accessing the inventory, while Enter acts as Start to pause the game.

Tips

  • Protect the caster: Because spells require chant time, use your frontline fighters to defend and draw enemy fire away from anyone preparing magic, preventing their chant from being broken.
  • Exploit elemental weaknesses: Magic is categorized into different elemental attributes. Match these against enemy vulnerabilities to clear encounters more efficiently.
  • Read the portraits: Character portraits change based on emotion during dialogue, adding vital context to the story and occasionally hinting at a character’s true intentions.
