The Chaos Engine is a top-down steampunk action shooter developed by The Bitmap Brothers and released for the Sega Genesis in 1993. Set in an alternate Victorian era transformed by a rogue atmospheric engine, the game sends a pair of hired mercenaries through four treacherous zones filled with lethal automata and mutated beasts.
How to Play
Select two mercenaries from a team of six, balancing raw firepower against movement speed and special items. Your objective is to locate and activate node keys across maze-like stages to open the exit hatch while fending off waves of enemies. Movement uses the arrow keys, actions map to Z, X, and S, and Enter pauses the game.
Tips
Prioritize upgrades for movement speed and main weapon power at the shop between worlds; slow mercenaries easily get trapped in late-game chokepoints. Search corners for secret nodes to reveal extra power-ups, and keep your secondary special ability ready for emergency crowd control.
