Game description:

Super Back to the Future Part II is a 1993 side-scrolling action game developed by Daft and published by Toshiba EMI exclusively for the Super Famicom — it never received a release outside Japan. Loosely following the film, it sends Marty McFly chasing the sports almanac Biff Tannen used to rewrite history, taking him through Hill Valley across three eras: 1955, 1985, and 2015. Much of the game has Marty riding a hoverboard through the streets, and the soundtrack — arranged from Alan Silvestri’s film theme — was scored by Hitoshi Sakimoto, later famous for Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy XII.

How to play

Marty rides his hoverboard through each stage, using a spin attack and jumping on enemies to take them out. Coins collected along the way can be spent at vending machines for power-ups and extra health, and Marty can take three hits before losing a life. Griff and Biff Tannen both appear as boss encounters.

Tips

  • Ease off the hoverboard speed in tight spots: the game’s camera sits close to Marty, so at full speed obstacles and enemies can appear with little warning — slowing down through unfamiliar sections gives you more time to react.
  • Bank your coins before a boss: vending machines sell health and power-ups, so holding onto coins as you approach a fight with Griff or Biff Tannen leaves you better stocked when it counts.
