Pipe Mania (often known as Pipe Dream) is a frantic puzzle game developed by Assembly Line and released for the SNES in 1988. Instead of falling blocks, you face a relentless flow of slime (or “flooz”) and a randomized queue of pipe pieces. Your task is to quickly build a continuous pipeline on a grid, staying ahead of the flow for as long as possible to survive the round.
How to Play
The objective is to construct a path of pipes long enough to meet the stage’s required distance before the fluid spills out. Use the directional buttons (โโโโ) to move your cursor around the grid, and press Z or X to place the next pipe piece from your queue onto the board. You must act quickly, as the fluid begins flowing shortly after the round starts.
Tips
- Watch the queue: The upcoming pipe pieces are always visible on the side of the screen. Plan your route several moves in advance instead of placing pieces blindly.
- Overwrite with caution: You can replace a pipe you’ve already placed if the fluid hasn’t reached it yet, but this costs points and causes a short time penalty while the piece is swapped.
- Maximize your score: Criss-cross pieces are incredibly valuable. Routing the flow through a cross piece twice not only saves space on the board but also awards significant bonus points.
