Game description:

Developed by Maxis Software and released for the SNES in 1989, this classic strategy simulator puts you in the mayor’s seat to build and manage a thriving metropolis. From zoning residential neighborhoods to laying down power lines and roads, you must balance your city’s budget, keep pollution in check, and keep citizens happy while dealing with unexpected disastersโ€”including attacks from a certain giant turtle.

How to play

Your goal is to grow your population to reach Megalopolis status while maintaining a high approval rating. You will need to build residential (R), commercial (C), and industrial (I) zones in a balanced ratio, connect them with transit lines, and provide them with electricity from power plants. Listen to the advice of your advisor, Dr. Wright, who will notify you of pressing issues like high taxes or crime rates.

Tips

  • Use transit lines instead of roads: Trains produce zero traffic and reduce pollution. You can build a highly efficient city by exclusively using transit lines, which completely eliminates traffic congestion complaints.
  • Boost land value with parks: Place parks near residential and commercial zones, especially in the center of a block of zones, to raise land values. Higher land value leads to denser buildings and more tax revenue.
  • Manage your taxes: Keep taxes at 7% during your early expansion to encourage rapid growth. Once your city matures and requires expensive services like police stations, you can adjust them slightly to maintain a balanced budget.
