Developed by Geoff Crammond and published by MicroStyle in 1989, Stunt Car Racer is a groundbreaking 3D racing game for DOS. Rather than traditional circuits, you race a custom V8-powered buggy across elevated, roller-coaster-style tracks suspended high in the air. The game uses a first-person perspective with flat-shaded polygons to deliver an incredible sense of speed and vertigo as you navigate massive jumps, steep drops, and banked curves.
The objective is to win head-to-head races across a league system, battling computer opponents on increasingly treacherous tracks. Handling your vehicle is a delicate balance of maintaining momentum and surviving massive air time. The roll cage on your screen visually cracks as you take damage from hard landings or collisions; if the cage shatters, your race is over. You can control the buggy using the keyboardโtypically S and D to steer, Enter to accelerate, and Space to brakeโor configure your preferred inputs in the main menu.
Mastering your boost is crucial: reserve it for long straights or steep uphill sections to maintain speed, and avoid using it right before a jump. When landing from massive air time, try to touch down smoothly on the downward slope to minimize suspension damage, as repeatedly smashing into flat ground will quickly wreck your car.
