Developed by Namco in 1982, Dig Dug is a classic arcade action game that was later brought to DOS. As the titular character, you dig through the dirt to clear stages of two distinct enemies: the red-goggled Pookas and the fire-breathing Fygars. Its unique mix of maze creation and risk-reward combat makes it one of the most recognisable titles of its era.
How to play
Your objective is to eliminate all enemies on the screen. You can defeat them by using your air pump to inflate them until they burst, or by tunneling under rocks to drop them on your pursuers. For the DOS version running in your browser, use the arrow keys to move and dig, and press Space, Ctrl, or Alt to fire your pump.
Tips
- Use rocks for big points: Crushing multiple enemies with a single falling rock yields a massive score bonus. Tunnel upward under a rock and wait for enemies to follow before stepping aside.
- Stun and run: You don’t always have to pop an enemy. Pumping them once or twice will stun them briefly, allowing you to walk straight through them to escape a trap.
- Mind the fire: Fygars can only breathe fire horizontally, and their fire can pass through thin layers of dirt. Always approach them from above or below when possible.
