Street Fighter II’: Champion Edition is Capcom’s 1992 arcade update to Street Fighter II, released worldwide that May. It kept the original’s global fighting tournament but rebalanced the roster and, for the first time in the series, let players take control of the four Grand Masters โ Balrog, Vega, Sagat, and M. Bison โ bringing the full roster to twelve. It also introduced mirror matches, letting any two players pick the same fighter and battle it out in different colored outfits.
How to Play
Win two rounds to take the match, then keep fighting through the roster until you reach the four Grand Masters. As an arcade game in the browser, the joystick is mapped to your arrow keys for movement, jumping, and blocking, with the original three-punch, three-kick layout typically mapped to Z, X, C (light, medium, heavy punch) and A, S, D (light, medium, heavy kick). Press Enter to start and Shift to insert a coin. Special moves use classic motion inputs โ a quarter-circle toward your opponent plus a punch throws a fireball like Ryu and Ken’s Hadouken, while Chun-Li’s own Kikoken fireball, new to this edition, uses the same motion.
Tips
- Ryu and Ken play differently here: Champion Edition was the first game to properly split their movesets and hitboxes apart, so don’t assume they behave identically anymore.
- Block both levels: hold away from your opponent to block standing attacks, and hold down-away to block low sweeps โ mixing high and low attacks is the main way opponents will get through your guard.
- Punish blocked strings with a throw: walk into range and press forward (or back) plus a heavy attack to throw an opponent who’s leaning on their block.
