Bionic Commando is a classic run-and-gun platformer released by Capcom for arcades in 1987. Taking on the role of Super Joe, players must infiltrate an enemy base to prevent the launch of devastating missiles. What sets this game apart from other platformers of its era is the complete absence of a jump button. Instead, navigation relies entirely on your bionic grappling hook, forcing a deliberate, tactical approach to both movement and combat.
How to play
Your objective is to traverse vertically and horizontally scrolling stages, defeat enemy soldiers, and reach the end of each level. Since you cannot jump, you must use the bionic arm to swing across gaps, pull yourself up to higher platforms, and knock enemies back.
Default Controls (Browser):
- Arrow Keys: Move left/right, aim up, or crouch.
- Z / X: Fire weapon / Fire grappling hook.
- Enter / Shift: Start / Insert Coin.
Tips
- Master the Swing: Releasing your grapple at the apex of a swing gives you the most horizontal distance. Practice the timing on safer platforms before tackling bottomless pits.
- Strategic Grappling: Your bionic arm isn’t just for movement. Use it to push enemies away or grab power-ups that are out of normal reach.
