Smash Remix is a fan-made gameplay mod of the original 1999 Nintendo 64 Super Smash Bros., built by an independent team led by JSsixtyfour. Rather than reinventing the game, it keeps the original’s distinctive physics and feel while expanding it with new playable characters, new stages, and refinements to the CPU opponents. Version 1.3.1, released in February 2023, is a polish patch that fixes a handful of specific bugs from the 1.3.x line: a Young Link model issue that could crash the boomerang, incorrect Kirby hat-copy action names when he copies Marina, and a self-destruct bug affecting Level 10 Ness and Lucas, alongside stage and item tweaks.
How to play
The goal is the same as the original Super Smash Bros.: rack up damage on your opponents to increase their knockback, then send them flying off the stage to take a stock. Whoever has the most stocks (or the last fighter standing) when time runs out wins.
In the browser, the Nintendo 64 controller maps to the keyboard as follows:
- Arrow keys – move / control stick
- X – A button (attack)
- Z – B button (special move)
- Shift – Select
- Enter – Start / pause
Tips
- Damage percentage determines knockback, not stock count — a fresh opponent at low percent takes much less knockback than one already worn down, so finishing blows land better once their percentage is high.
- Recovering onto the stage is safer than recovering onto the ledge when your opponent is waiting to edge-guard, since a ledge grab leaves you briefly vulnerable.
- Landing an attack just as you touch the ground cuts its recovery lag (Z-canceling), a core Smash 64 technique that Remix keeps intact — use it to stay safe after aerial attacks.
