Shodani Nintei: Shodan Pro Mahjong is a traditional Japanese mahjong game released for the Super Famicom (SNES) in 1995. Developed by Khaos and published by Gaps, this title distinguishes itself from other mahjong games of the era by using digitized photographs of real-life people as CPU opponents, complete with conversational elements during matches, rather than the standard anime-style portraits.
How to Play
The objective follows the standard rules of Japanese Riichi Mahjong, where you aim to build a winning hand of 14 tiles by drawing and discarding. Use the D-pad to select your tiles and navigate the menu, the A button to confirm actions like discarding or calling tiles (Pon, Chi, Kan, Riichi), and the B button to cancel. In the browser, these map to the arrow keys, Z, and X.
Tips
- Pay close attention to the discard piles of your real-life CPU opponents to deduce what tiles they might be waiting for and avoid dealing into their hands.
- Since the game is entirely in Japanese, familiarise yourself with the positions of the menu options for calling tiles (such as Pon or Riichi) to ensure smooth gameplay if you cannot read the text.
