Developed by id Software, Doom defined the first-person shooter genre when it released in 1993, and this SNES port is a remarkable technical feat. Powered by the Super FX 2 chip built into the cartridge, it brings the fast-paced, demon-slaying action of the PC original to a 16-bit console. You play as a lone space marine fighting through the overrun UAC facilities on Mars, blasting hordes of iconic enemies with an arsenal that includes the classic shotgun, chaingun, and plasma rifle.
How to play
Your objective is to survive each level by finding the exit switch, often requiring you to hunt down colored keycards to open locked doors along the way. Navigate the 3D environments using the arrow keys to move and turn, and the shoulder buttons (Q and E) to strafe left and right. Use the primary action buttons (Z and X) to fire your weapon and open doors or flip switches, and cycle through your inventory of weapons with the secondary buttons (A and S).
Tips
- Strafe constantly during combat. Moving side-to-side with the shoulder buttons is the most reliable way to dodge incoming fireballs from Imps and Cacodemons.
- Listen carefully to your surroundings. Enemies make distinct grunts when they spot you, giving you an early warning before you round a corner.
- Conserve your ammunition. Use the basic pistol or chainsaw on weaker enemies like zombies, and save your shotgun shells for tougher demons.
