Rolling Thunder is a challenging run-and-gun action game developed by Namco, bringing their 1986 arcade hit to the NES in 1989. You play as Albatross, a top-tier secret agent tasked with infiltrating the heavily guarded Geldra syndicate to rescue your captured partner, Leila. Known for its methodical pace and limited resources, this classic stands out from other platformers of the era by focusing on strategic cover, resource management, and precise timing.
How to Play
Navigate the Geldra base and eliminate masked guards while keeping a close eye on your limited ammunition. Use your keyboard’s Arrow keys to move, duck, and aim, Z and X to jump and shoot (mapping to the NES A and B buttons), and Enter to start or pause. Pressing Up allows you to jump to higher walkways, and pressing Up in front of marked doors lets you slip inside to hide or gather supplies.
Tips
- Use Cover Wisely: Ducking into empty doors or crouching behind crates lets enemy fire pass safely over you. Wait for the perfect moment to pop out and shoot.
- Manage Your Ammo: You do not have infinite bullets. Enter every door marked “BULLETS” or “ARMS” to restock your pistol rounds and machine gun ammunition.
- Learn the Guards: The masked Geldra operatives behave differently based on their uniform color. Pay attention to these colors to anticipate whether they will shoot, throw grenades, or take multiple hits.
